Hokkaido Tour

The highlights of our Hokkaido tour include visits to Ainu San-sei* embroiderers, organic farmers in Tokachi, and Kombu** fishermen.  You will meet them at their craft circle, vegetable field, or Kombu-shredding workshop to learn about their works, lives, and histories first hand.  This trip is also a food journey.  Traveling from east to west on Japan’s northernmost island, you will taste a variety of local food, mingling with the locals.  You will have Chan-Chan-Yaki*** which is cooked by fishermen’s wives in a fishing village, taste local ice cream at a family-run dairy farm, or slurp hand-made soba at a small noodle shop.  You will also enjoy exquisite Kaiseki dishes one night, staying at a deluxe lake-view Onsen hotel.  You are traveling in early summer or fall, one of the most beautiful travel seasons in Hokkaido.  Yet, you will see few other tourists anywhere you go, because we travel off the beaten path.  Enjoy an early-morning nature walk around the lake, a guided walk in the serene marshland, or a self-guided walk at a museum in the woods – the special paths and venues we scouted only for our group.

*Ainu Sansei: third-generation Ainu or a person whose grandparents were Ainu
**Kombu: kelp
***Chan-Chan-Yaki: miso (soybean paste)-based grilled salmon and vegetable

News: The spring Hokkaido tour will enjoy Yosakoi Soran Festival in Sapporo.
